The Bangkok Sporting Club is a techno-thriller based in the City of Angels, Bangkok Thailand. I began to form the basic story after my first trip to Thailand. As a Westerner, I had a very defined idea of the way things work. Traveling to Thailand changed all that.

Thailand is a completely unique country. It is the only country in South East Asia that never fell under foreign control. To put it bluntly, they do not march to the same drummer as the rest of the world. They have their own set of values. They value the size of one’s heart more than the size of one’s wallet. This by itself is unique in the world.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. They have the same goals as everyone else. They want their kids to grow up in a safe environment. They want their children’s lives to be better than their own. But being Buddhist, their main goal in life is to move up to the next level in the hierarchy of life.

Buddhism is a very forgiving religion. Followers try to do the best they can. There is no heaven and hell as in a Christian sense. If you don’t learn and better yourself in life, you must repeat the life until you graduate to the next level. If you mess up or make a mistake, you can outweigh the discretion by performing a greater positive act.

It is this logic that allows Thailand to operate in the way it does. A person gains much merit by respecting and taking care of their parents who gave them life. If one must sully themselves in pursuit of this goal, it is overrided by the act of taking care of family.

In the west, prostitution is looked down upon. It is also looked down upon by the Thais, but it is tolerated if one comes from a poor family and is using the money to support the family.

The confusion this caused me as a tourist was the basis for the book. Can someone be a prostitute and still be a good person? If someone does a bad act like theft or murder, does that mean they are a bad person? Can a bad person do good things? Can a good person do bad things and still remain a good person?

In this blog, I’ll try to tell you how I came to write the book and what I was thinking when I crafted the story. I found that I was torn between what I thought was right and wrong. In a world where western morals don’t apply, I found myself wondering…

Are good and evil absolutes?
